London’s Art World kicks off this year with the opening of Cindy Cherman’s new work
11-01-11 (11th of January, 2010) at the Spruth Magers London Gallery.
Marking a departure with in Cindy Sherman’s usual artistic style and practice from the format of the framed photograph, she has assembled a cast of uniquely individual characters on large photographic formats.
Famous since the mid 1970s for the use of herself as the ‘canvas’ in her work by which she takes over the roles as the director, as the photographer, and as the model in portraying a wide variety of characters from a variety of periods. This time around, her work was created in shrines to nondescript, eccentric characters who are casting ambiguous disconnecting glances at the viewer.
Perhaps the change of her usual medium has led a different appreciation of her former admirers, but nevertheless she manages to woe new ones with her usual intriguing images.
